KEY SCRIPTURE/MEMORY VERSE:Proverbs 4:20-21(NKJV)
My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart;
Two days ago, we learnt that it’s so important to never lose sight of our identity in Christ and what God’s word says about us and we do this by protecting what we see and what we hear.
The reason why this is so important is that the influences of what we see and hear can be so subtle. In fact, very often, you won’t realize until those negative realities have taken root.
But the truth is, what you hear and see is so important because it kickstarts a cycle- First it determines what you think and what you think determines what you feel(your emotions), which then determines your decisions, those decisions go on to determine your actions, your actions determine your habits, your habits determine your character and in the end, influence your destination.
If you pause and look back over the years, you’ll be able to trace certain realities in your life and who you have become just by following this pattern.
To show you how crucial this is, scripture actually says that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he(Proverbs 23:7). That is to say, you eventually become the picture or narrative that you internalized from what you saw or heard.
It is important to realize that the result of this cycle is who you become, your character, which in turn, becomes what people naturally expect of you. Think about it, when people see you, what do they expect of you?
If you notice, when situations happen, you find that people respond differently to different situations. The reason is simple- a character has been formed overtime that makes person A respond in a way that is different from person J.
As a believer who is growing and making progress, you must understand that to change certain outcomes in your life, there is a roadmap to transformation that begins with the seed of what comes in through your eye/ear gates.
And you must protect those gates.
REFLECTION
Today, watch what you allow come in through your ear and eye gates.
